Sports is a universal language, which transcends borders and ideologies. It can be a diplomatic bridge to peace and a vehicle for healing political and cultural rifts. It may not be the deciding factor of a nation’s foreign policies, but it can provide a common ground, acting as a bridge that gives countries a reason to interact and build relationships over strained political and economic tensions. Taking the opportunity of a series of Olympic Games being hosted by the ROK, Japan, and China consecutively (PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018, Tokyo Summer Games in 2021, Beijing Winter Games in 2022), trilateral consultative mechanism in the field of sports was established in 2016. The first Trilateral Sports Ministers’ Meeting was convened in September 2016 to further strengthen cooperation in the field of sports, especially regarding sports industry, disabled sports, anti-doping, and physical education. The three countries have also initiated various projects such as Trilateral Junior Sports Exchange Meet.
