Seminar & Forum TCS Participated in the 11th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity

The Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) delegation, headed by Secretary-General YANG Houlan, participated in the 11th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity held at the Jeju International Convention Centre on May 25-27.
On May 25, the TCS organized two sessions and Deputy Secretary-General UMEZAWA Akima led the sessions as the moderator. During the first TCS session titled “Trilateral Views: Promoting nuclear safety cooperation in Northeast Asia”, Ms. ZHANG Ou, Project Manager of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center (NRSC) under Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, Mr. KIM Kyun-Tae, Director of Division of Emergency Preparedness at Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), and Mr. FUJITA Kenichi, Director of International Affairs Office at Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) of Japan, introduced the status of nuclear energy development, policy and legal system for regulation and nuclear safety culture in the respective countries, and progress of bilateral and trilateral cooperation in this field. The speakers encouraged the three countries to further promote trilateral cooperation on nuclear safety especially under the current framework of the Top Regulators Meeting (TRM) on Nuclear Safety, which has achieved remarkable progress for the past 8 years.
The second session, “New Horizon for Northeast Asian Tourism: Increasing inbound flows through trilateral cooperation”, introduced the current state of inbound tourism market in China, Japan and Korea, and discussed the Visit East Asia Campaign, a follow-up of the 7th Trilateral Tourism Ministers’ Meeting for increasing visitors from Europe and North America. The speakers of this session were representatives from national tourism organizations including Mr. LI Baorong, Director of Seoul branch of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), Mr. OISHI Eiichiro, Director of Overseas Promotion at Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), and Mr. KIM Jin Hwal, Director of Overseas Marketing at Korea Tourism Organization (KTO). In addition, Ms. LEE Gye Hee from Kyunghee University and Mr. Bradley BRENNAN from Inha University also joined the session from the academia to share their expertise with the audience.
SG Yang also delivered an opening remarks at the session titled “Building a New Tripartite Cooperation of Korea, China, and Japan”, which was organized by Korea National Diplomacy Academy (KNDA) on May 26. He highlighted the achievements of trilateral cooperation in political and security, economic, sustainable development, and socio-cultural fields, as well as the challenges and the TCS’ efforts to overcome them.
In addition, the TCS delegation participated in the major events related to the East Asian Cultural Cities (EACCs). On May 26, SG Yang and DSG Umezawa attended the 2nd Working-Level Meeting among the 2016 EACCs in which Jeju, Nara, and Ningbo discussed future projects to be implemented among the cities throughout the year. At the meeting, SG Yang delivered the remarks that emphasized the significance of EACC as the key platform of trilateral cultural cooperation and exchange.
Following the working-level meeting, on May 27, DSG Umezawa was invited as the moderator to the Jeju Forum session on “Building a Creative Partnership among East Asian Cultural Cities”. The session gathered policy makers of the past and present Cultural Cities of Ningbo, Nara, Qingdao, Gwangju, Cheongju, and Jeju, as well as the representatives of the ROK Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST), EU, and the World Culture Open, the private culture organization that implements the EACC project in Jeju, delivering the strong message that the EACCs have contributed to the promotion of trilateral cultural exchanges based on the wider public participation.
