Seminar & Forum Expert Meeting on RCEP 2022.03.29

On March 29, 2022, the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) organized “the Expert Meeting on RCEP: Trilateral Cooperation and Regional Economic Integration in the Post-Covid-19 Era” in a virtual format. The Meeting brought together prominent experts from China, Japan, the ROK and beyond to explore possible trilateral cooperation in implementing the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) Agreement to maximize its economic effects, as well as to examine ways to further strengthen regional economic cooperation and integration in the post-Covid-19 era. 

In the first session, speakers highlighted the significance of accelerating the implementation of the RCEP and further upgrading the Agreement to maximize its economic effects. Meanwhile, the effort to minimize the negative impact of geopolitical risks and global protectionism is also needed. The experts from China, Japan and the ROK also made presentations on specific topics to share CJK’s economic cooperation with CLM (Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar) to explore trilateral cooperation in addressing regional economic disparity under the RCEP framework. Additionally, experts from ASEAN think tanks shared their insights on the cooperation among the member states to promote RCEP from ASEAN perspectives. 

The experts, in the second session, focused on the discussions about the implications of the RCEP for other regional existing and potential FTAs. Apart from that, representatives of international organization and multilateral development banks also shared their insights and suggestions on ramping up regional collaborations in the fields of finance, infrastructure connectivity and sustainable development to further strengthen regional economic cooperation and integration in the post-Covid-19 era.
